c-Fos expression induced by electroacupuncture at the Zusanli point in rats submitted to repeated immobilization BJMBR
Medeiros,M.A.; Canteras,N.S.; Suchecki,D.; Mello,L.E.A.M..
In laboratory animals, acupuncture needs to be performed on either anesthetized or, if unanesthetized, restrained subjects. Both procedures up-regulate c-Fos expression in several areas of the central nervous system, representing therefore a major pitfall for the assessment of c-Fos expression induced by electroacupuncture. Thus, in order to reduce the effect of acute restraint we used a protocol of repeated restraint for the assessment of the brain areas activated by electroacupuncture in adult male Wistar rats weighing 180-230 g. Repeated immobilization protocols (6 days, 1 h/day and 13 days, 2 h/day) were used to reduce the effect of acute immobilization stress on the c-Fos expression induced by electroacupuncture at the Zusanli point (EA36S). Animals...

Effect of acupuncture on TNF-alpha, IL-1b and IL-10 concentrations in the peritoneal exudates of carrageenan-induced peritonitis in rats Ciência Rural
Scognamillo-Szabó,Márcia Valéria Rizzo; Bechara,Gervásio Henrique; Cunha,Fernando de Queiroz.
Acupuncture is an ancient and empirical therapeutic procedure known by its efficacy in the treatment of pain. However, the influence of acupuncture on inflammatory process is still poorly understood and additional research is needed. In this work, we investigated the mechanism of action of manual acupuncture on the inhibition of neutrophil migration to the peritoneal cavity induced by the inflammatory stimulus carrageenan in Wistar rats. Previous results from our laboratory showed that this anti-inflammatory effect is not due to endogenous corticoid release. Furthermore, the concentration of IL-1b, but not of TNF-alpha or IL-10 in the carrageenan-induced exudates was reduced in the acupuncture group. Further research...

Effect of the acupoints ST-36 (Zusanli) and SP-6 (Sanyinjiao) on intestinal myoelectric activity of Wistar rats BJMBR
Tabosa,A.; Yamamura,Y.; Forno,E.R.; Mello,L.E.A.M..
Despite its ancient use as a therapeutic tool to treat several ailments, acupuncture still faces the challenge of scrutiny by Western science both in terms of its efficacy and in terms of the characterization of its effects and mechanisms of actions underlying these effects. We investigated under well-controlled and carefully characterized conditions the influence of electrical stimulation of acupuncture points ST-36 (Zusanli) and SP-6 (Sanyinjiao) on the myoelectric activity of the small intestine of 38 adult male Wistar rats. Electrical recordings obtained by means of four electrodes chronically implanted in the small intestine were used to assess the effects of acupuncture (electroacupuncture stimulation set at 2 Hz, intermittent stimulation, 1 V, for...

Effects of acupuncture on behavioral, cardiovascular and hormonal responses in restraint-stressed Wistar rats BJMBR
Guimarães,C.M.; Pinge,M.C.M.; Yamamura,Y.; Mello,L.E.A.M..
Stress is a well-known entity and may be defined as a threat to the homeostasis of a being. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of acupuncture on the physiological responses induced by restraint stress. Acupuncture is an ancient therapeutic technique which is used in the treatment and prevention of diseases. Its proposed mechanisms of action are based on the principle of homeostasis. Adult male Wistar EPM-1 rats were divided into four groups: group I (N = 12), unrestrained rats with cannulas previously implanted into their femoral arteries for blood pressure and heart rate measurements; group II (N = 12), rats that were also cannulated and were submitted to 60-min immobilization; group III (N = 12), same as group II but with acupuncture needles...

High Prevalence of Sternal Foramen: Quantitative, Anatomical Analysis and its Clinical Implications in Acupuncture Practice International Journal of Morphology
Babinski,Marcio A; Rafael,Fábio A; Steil,Alisson D; Sousa-Rodrigues,Célio F; Sgrott,Emerson A; de Paula,Rafael Cisne; Fernandes,Rodrigo M. P.
The aim of our study was to verify the prevalence of the sternal foramen in adult cadavers and dry bones, as well as to determine its exact localization and relation to acupuncture points. One hundred eighty sternums fixed and contained in 10% formaldehyde solution were examined, of which 100 were dry bones and 80 belonged to adult cadavers. The morphometric measures were expressed in millimeters when measuring the length: 1) from jugular incision to the foramen (JI-F); 2) from sternal angle to the foramen (EA-F); 3) from xiphoid process to the foramen (XP-F). Statistical analysis was performed to compare expected vs obtained foramina frequency, using Fisher's test (p0.05 was considered significant). The results showed 16.6% sternal foramina, significant...

High-frequency electroacupuncture versus carprofen in an incisional pain model in rats BJMBR
Teixeira,F.M.; Castro,L.L.; Ferreira,R.T.; Pires,P.A.; Vanderlinde,F.A.; Medeiros,M.A..
The objective of the present study was to compare the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) and carprofen (CP) on postoperative incisional pain using the plantar incision (PI) model in rats. A 1-cm longitudinal incision was made through skin, fascia and muscles of a hind paw of male Wistar rats and the development of mechanical and thermal hypersensitivity was determined over 4 days using the von Frey and Hargreaves methods, respectively. Based on the experimental treatments received on the third postoperative day, the animals were divided into the following groups: PI+CP (CP, 2 mg/kg, po); PI+EAST36 (100-Hz EA applied bilaterally at the Zusanli point (ST36)); PI+EANP (EA applied to a non-acupoint region); PI+IMMO (immobilization only); PI (vehicle). In the...

Opioidergic orofacial antinociception induced by electroacupuncture at acupoint St36 BJMBR
Almeida,R.T.; Perez,A.C.; Francischi,J.N.; Castro,M.S.; Duarte,I.D.G..
The participation of opioids in the antinociceptive effect of electroacupuncture was evaluated in terms of nociception produced by thermal stimuli applied to the face of male Wistar rats, weighing 180-230 g. Electrical stimulation (bipolar and asymmetric square wave with 0.5 mA intensity for 20 min) of acupoint St36, located in the anterior tibial muscle 10 mm distal to the knee joint, induced antinociception in the present model, which was maintained for 150 min. Acupoint LI4, located in the junction of the first and second metacarpal bones, did not achieve antinociception at any frequency studied (5 Hz: 1.7 ± 0.1; 30 Hz: 1.8 ± 0.1; 100 Hz: 1.7 ± 0.1 vs 1.4 ± 0.2). The antinociception obtained by stimulation of acupoint St36 was only achieved when high...

Use of moxibustion as an auxiliary treatment in wound healing of the snake Eunectes murinus (anaconda): case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Garcia,V.C.; Prado,C.V..
ABSTRACT Large snakes of the Boidae family, such as Eunectes murinus, require special techniques to facilitate their care when they are sick. Thus, an acupuncture technique called moxibustion was applied that utilizes burning of the weed Artemisia vulgaris for heating at specific points on the skin without handling the animals. The objective of this case report was to describe the use of moxibustion acupuncture as an auxiliary treatment for snakes. A female, 4.0 meters long and weighing about 30 kg, belonging to a Biological Museum of the Butantan Institute, showed symptoms of weight loss, anorexia and hyperemia in the ventral region. The snake was examined and treated with ciprofloxacin antibiotics and a month showed an area of necrosis that exposed the...
